Assiah Russell of Puttin' on the Glitz
Puttin’ on the Glitz is one of downtown Portsmouth’s newest shops, located at 150 State Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The tiny shop, a jewel in itself, is filled with fabulous upscale fashion jewelry and accessories that are perfect for everyday, as well as for special occasions. We carry more than 30 lines of fine fashion jewels from around the world, including; Sorrelli, Colleen Toland and Presh.
Assiah grew up on a large farm in New Hampshire. One of her favorite moments was the fall arrival of the Sears & Roebuck Catalogue (my “Wish Book”) when she would steal away to sit under a huge maple on the “big lawn” and study the latest fashions. She spent summers traveling throughout the United States and soon learned that she had a distinct love of beauty and fashion. After high school, she studied fashion merchandising and modeling in Boston.
In her early 20’s, while traveling about in Italy, Assiah taught herself to make jewelry that she sold in the streets with other young vendors from around the world. Later, as a professional chef on a fashion photography shoot in Jamaica, she developed a sewing project “Soft Jewels,” one-of-a-kind pins fashioned from a collage of fabric and brilliant hand-sewn beads that provided income for five Jamaican women.
Another turn in her career found Assiah working for women’s health and an AIDS Service Organization for twenty years. Then after getting lost in the jewelry district in NY, the idea of Puttin’ on the Glitz – Daily Jewels, her hand-selected collection of jewels, was born. The look is vintage, distinctive upscale fashion jewelry — Austrian crystals, Czech glass, fine beads, pearls and semi-precious stones.
Why "Daily Jewels”? Assiah believes they are meant to be worn every day with everything from casual jeans to more formal wear and not kept in the jewelry box until that special occasion. She believes that jewels reflect the soul and personality of the woman wearing them. Daily jewels, a rare collection of vintage beaded purses, and fine fashion accessories are what you will find in this little gem of a shop. (Photo top right)
